Where did Yoga begin?

It’s thought that Yoga has been practiced from the very beginning of civilization, somewhere around Over 5,000 years ago in India, on the shores of Lake Kantisarovar in the Himalayas. Long before the first religions or belief systems were established, the science of Yoga was developed. Shiva is regarded as the first yogi, or Adiyogi, as well as the first Guru, or Adi Guru, in yogic literature. Adiyogi poured his profound knowledge to the legendary Saptarishis, often known as the “seven sages”. These sages spread this potent yogic science throughout the world, including Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa and South America.

It’s interesting to note that contemporary historians have been astounded by the striking similarities between ancient societies from all around the world. The yogic discipline, however, developed to its maximum extent in India. The Saptarishi Agastya, who traversed the Indian subcontinent, built this civilization around a fundamentally yogic way of living.

The Rig Veda, a collection of ancient religious books, is where the word “Yoga” first appears. Four prehistoric religious writings known as the Vedas were originally authored in Sanskrit. The Rig Veda, the first of the Vedas, is a collection of more than a thousand hymns and mantras that were employed by priests in the Vedic era.

It is divided into ten chapters known as mandalas. Rishis (sages), who polished and improved Yoga, recorded their beliefs and practices in the Upanishads, a massive compilation that contains more than 200 scriptures.

Introduction of Yoga to the World

In the late 1890s, when Indian monks first started transferring their knowledge to the West, Yoga, as it is now called, began to gain popularity. Travelers to India had the chance to mingle with the yogis and experience their practise firsthand.

Swami Vivekananda is frequently credited with bringing Yoga to the West (1863–1902). By referring to Yoga as a “science of the mind” and translating Yogic books from Sanskrit into English, he organized world conferences on the subject immediately after arriving in the United States of America for the first time in 1883. He captured the nation’s attention in 1893 by exhibiting Yoga at the Chicago World’s Fair while on a visit to the US.

India Yoga Alliance – A Closer Perspective

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

This famous phrase from the Maha Upanishad is alternatively spelled Vasudeva Kutumbakam. It translates into “The world is one family” that originates from the ancient Sanskrit words Vasudeva for eternal reality and Kutumbaka for family.

Alternatively, Vasudha means Earth, and the entire meaning remains the same where the world and the entire universe is one.

Our inspiration began from this phrase, and the concept to build a Yoga community on a global scale formed somewhere in 2012-2013. We started from the basics and moved towards gathering more information and advanced concepts of Yoga.

It was around the same time where India’s honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea of having an international day for Yoga. His proposal was approved at the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014.

This laid the foundation to start a Yoga organization. It had a profound influence on us, and gave us the impetus to launch our brand; India Yoga Alliance, focusing on creating a transformative hub for individuals across all backgrounds to come and experience the Ancient wonder.

The coming together of enriching experience in the traditional field, including the passion & commitment to transform humanity laid the foundation for brand that takes decisive steps to inspire a lasting transformation in the community as a whole.

The organization strives to bring forth the significance of Yoga, including how each individual is inherently connected to this age-old tradition to light.
